DYRT90s? // Collective Soul: Shine

In college, my friend Tim and I started a semi-comedic acoustic cover band called Bad Sneakers.  Even though he possessed 98% of the combined musical talent of the group, he graciously let me pick all the songs.  In a career that spanned nearly 14 months and encompassed the musical stylings of everyone from Talking Heads to Natalie Imbruglia to Dashboard Confessional, this is the only one of my suggestions he ever vetoed.

I never bothered to ask why, because I already knew the answer.  Even though the Hints, Allegation, and Things Left Unsaid released by Atlantic Records in 1994 was the unchanged (and largely unmixed) set of demos Ed Roland tracked in a Stockbridge, GA basement in 1992, it somehow possesses the particular brand of studio sheen that makes all mainstream rock from the 1990s simultaneously infections and insufferable.
