Live Picks: 02.03.2011 – 02.09.2011
02.03: Bounce IV featuring Big Freedia + Katey Red + Rusty Lazer – Republic
02.04: Native America + New Grass Country Club + Bow and Arrow – Cafe Prytania
Native America, at least during the recording of debut EP Dancing About Architecture, was the epitome of a one man band. Ross Farbe played all the music (on a collection of thrift store keyboards, old guitars and other random instruments), handled all the recording (setting up a portable mic rig in abandoned warehouses, parking garages and his own bedroom), and took care of all the mixing and engineering.
To bring his dissonant dream pop to life, Farbe recruited a few of his friends from New Grass Country Club and current and former groups Sun Hotel and Mojo Method to fill out Native America: live-band edition. Together, they add a buoyant punch and springy groove to Farbe’s compositions while still maintaining the airy, tripped out sheen that made the songs on Dancing About Architecture so compelling in the first place.
02.05: Yann Tierson + S. Carey – Republic
02.06: Why are We Building Such a Big Ship? + Ratty Scurvics and His Imaginary Quartet + Lady Baby Miss – AllWays Lounge
2.08: Los Po-Boy-Citos – Mid-City Lanes Rock & Bowl
