Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it right. No one had to tell that to Turbo Fruits lead singer Jonas Stein, who, after realizing things in his former band Be Your Own Pet were getting a little too cutesy somewhere between the release of their sophomore album Get Awkward and the music video shoot for “The Kelly Affair”, jumped ship and started over with some of his Nashville brethren. It wasn’t long before the newly formed Turbo Fruits’ loud, analogue, garage rock recordings of little more than crunching distortion and symbol crashes – with the occasional cover of an MC5 cover of a Jerry Lee Lewis cover – got the band on bills with Jay Reatard, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., and Monotonix.
After a semi-legendary run co-headling shows with Surfer Blood at last year’s South by Southwest Festival, Turbo Fruits are joining Georgian loudness veterans the Black Lips for the annual Lundi Gras party at One Eyed Jack’s hosted by inventors/puppeteers/electronic noise musicians Quintron and Miss Pussycat. The stacked bill also includes local bounce rappers Vockah Redu & the Cru, whose national notoriety has been exponentially growing as of late.
