Happy Talk Band Joins Alex McMurray’s Saturn Bar Residency

Alex McMurray isn’t just one of the most talented guitarists in New Orleans, he’s also one of the most hard-working. At any given time, McMurray is a card-carrying member of as many as nine bands: he shares the stage with Jonathan Freilich in folk-duo The Tom Paines, Washboard Chaz and sousaphonist Matt Perrine join him in The Tin Men, and he is an integral part of both Paul Sanchez’s Rolling Road Show and sea-worthy uber-super-group The Valparaiso Men’s Chorus (just to name a few). But the most awesome project he participates in is undoubtedly wicked local alt-country institution Happy Talk Band.
So it was with great delight that we learned McMurray’s Happy Talk comrades will be joining his weekly solo gigs at Saturn Bar:
Thursday, June 16 is the unofficial start of The Happy Talk Band’s mostly acoustic, unsafe at any speed weekly residency at Saturn Bar.
That full-band, full-power Happy Talk shows are practically required viewing is no secret, but anyone familiar with lead singer Luke Allen’s touchingly grim, incredibly diverse songwriting sensibilities will attest that a pared down set in the friendly confines of The Saturn Bar is sure to be something special. Happy Talk Band is scheduled to play from 10pm – 11pm every Thursday “for the foreseeable future”, with Alex McMurray’s usual ripper of a solo set following after.
