Donovan Wolfington: 06.14.2012

Donovan Wolfington: 06.14.2012

Though there’s much one can often glean from seeing a young band at their first show back from their first tour, I wouldn’t have anticipated the strides Donovan Wolfington has managed to make in a mere matter of days, the band’s short tour with pals ArchAnimals taking them only as far as San Antonio. Nevertheless, [...]

06.23: Mrs. Magician + Theresa Andersson – Joy Theater

Narrowly missing New Orleans on their last tour, Mrs. Magician is now – in true oddball fashion – making their way to Joy Theater on Saturday night. The event, part of Bon Appétit’s three-city “Grub Crawl”, features support from local heavyweight Theresa Andersson and a full service open bar. As such, it promises to be one of the more hilariously off-the-wall concert experiences outside of a Quintron Lundi Gras – fucked out in every awesome way imaginable.

ArchAnimals: 06.14.2012

ArchAnimals: 06.14.2012

Before I get lost in the flight of fancy that is to follow, let me begin by saying unequivocally that ArchAnimals are currently the most underrated live band in New Orleans. In a town practically run on a collective desire to hone and perfect a particular style of music designed to embody all that is [...]

Thanks, Dog: A Strangely Fitting Kinship

Thanks, Dog: A Strangely Fitting Kinship

It was only recently that I began to finally fathom, after four years or so, the narrow yet oddly pervasive influence of Dr. Dog in the consciousness of New Orleans. I’ve always felt their presence here; it’s inescapable when you live in the town that boarded the dudes who started a label specifically to put [...]

06.03: Dummy Dumpster + Sports & Leisure + Glasgow – The Big Top

Anyone who has had the pleasure of witnessing the unbridled wackiness of Dummy Dumpster knows that the band’s absurdist exterior (vulgar, non sequitur subject matter against a tapestry of Germs-esque hardcore) thinly masks a bubbling talent for authenticity and a knack for genuinely engrossing songwriting that can only come from longevity. On Sunday, they meet up with two other bands from seemingly different corners of the New Orleans underground rock for the most eclectic lineup The Big Top’s Punk Rock Takeover matinee series has offered.

Random Notes: Memorial Day Edition

Random Notes: Memorial Day Edition

With the three day weekend coming up, there is plenty of local news to sink your ear teeth into. This Memorial Day make sure to party, be safe and do something awesome like these guys. Earl Scioneaux III, better known as The Madd Wikkid, also known as the man behind the knobs for recent recordings [...]

Hangout Music Festival, Day 2: 05.19.2012

It’s a good thing Friday and Sunday are packing somewhat less of a punch, because Saturday knocked me flat on my ass. There was a joyful morning set from Lafayette’s GIVERS to start off the day, followed by the knee-slapping, bluegrass goodness of The Devil Makes Three. Heartless Bastards and Gary Clark Jr. brought some [...]

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Missing Monuments’ New Video, “(I’m Gonna) Love You Back To Life”

It’s been nearly a year since the public last had opportunity to bob its collective head to new music from New Orleans-based garage punk godfather King Louie Bankston, but he and his Missing Monuments are ready to come out swinging in the second half of 2012. Today the power pop quartet unleashes new single [...]
