03.29: Bomb the Music Industry! + The Lollies + Safety + All People – The Big Top > Boyfrndz + Caddywhompus + Sun Hotel + Chicken Gyro – Circle Bar

To be clear, Block Party is going to be the event of the year for the New Orleans punk rock underground, and it will be difficult for any single concert this year to top the twelve hours of non-stop music, records, food and fun that it’s going to offer. But damned if tonight’s double venue whatever-you-call-it doesn’t come close. Teaming up for what amounts to a mini-festival in its own right, the Community and Chinquapin camps plan to give the public a teaser of what’s in store next month on Clio Street.

Block Party 2012 Lineup Announced!

Just as the NFL Draft, with all the pomp and circumstance that surround it, is considered by some to be America’s fourth major professional sport, the first few months of every year, during which time details about the annual Festival Season’s numerous events are unveiled in quick succession, is a noteworthy and exciting music-centric stretch [...]

The 4th annual Community Records Block Party, held earlier this year in April, was a distinct – if humble – success for the young, ambitious, hard-boiled New Orleans DIY label. Expanding on previous years’ hallmarks of conscientious bohemian family fun anchored by their own stable of punk, ska and hardcore bands, 2011 saw larger crowd [...]

The Lollies: Potential

The Lollies: Potential

There isn’t a whole lot of mystery to how local punk band the Lollies are finding their niche in the New Orleans musical landscape. Since emerging on the scene earlier this year and playing a string of memorable performances with an unmatched melodic intensity, the young four-piece has been cultivating a loyal following of fans who have [...]

10.04: DāM-FunK + Master Blazter – One Eyed Jacks

DāM-FunK’s first New Orleans gig was an arresting experience with half the crowd propulsively writhing to his massively infectious re-imaging of the seminal boogie that gave birth to hip-hop’s G-Funk era, and the other half was almost frozen in place, at one consumed, enveloped and – to be perfectly honest – a bit overwhelmed by the sheer intensity of DāM-FunK’s futuristic take on the low-down synth grooves of the mid-1980s. As a one man show, DāM-FunK is a beat-mapping, keytar-wielding, drum programming force of nature, and in his return to One Eyed Jacks he’ll also be joined by his friends Computer Jay and J-1 for a set as Master Blazter, a three-piece supergroup that delves even deeper into the transcendent funk he knows so well.

The Lollies: 06.24.2011

When I was younger, playing in a band and going to all ages punk and ska shows every other night, the most common – if not annoying – time-filler was the myriad of high school and college-aged bands that would immaturely show up thoroughly unprepared to play. Decked out in traditional Johnny Rotten garb, they’d [...]
